A Tidy Shelf Beats a Panic Buy
My family grew up with earthquake drills.
Every house we lived in had one tidy shelf: water, a lantern, rice, a radio, and a list on the door. Nobody made a fuss about it. It was just there.
When the power went out, nobody ran to the store. We knew what we had, and where it was.
Being prepared isn't about fear. My parents kept a tidy shelf and a calm head, and that's what got us through.
Most preparedness advice is written to scare you into buying gear. This isn't. Most of the system uses things you already own or can get at a grocery store.
I wrote it down for people 55 and over. Big print, short steps, one shelf at a time.
The same plan my family used, set up for an ordinary American home.
Introducing: The Quiet Prepared Home (Digital Ebook)
40 short chapters in 9 parts. One calm system, in the order you should set it up.
Short steps, large print, and a printable 72-hour checklist for the fridge door.
With today's welcome deal, Book 2: The Go-Bag & Evacuation Guide comes free. What to grab, where to go, and who to call when you have to leave fast.
This is the book's free sample page; Chapter 22 builds on it. Old shoes and a spare flashlight will do. You can set it up tonight.
Shoes, light and glasses within reach
Shoes, light and glasses within reach
Picture a strong earthquake at 3 in the morning. The room is dark and the power is out. There's broken glass on the floor from the picture frame that fell off the wall.
- Pick a bag you can close. A drawstring bag, or an old pillowcase tied shut with a cord, works fine.
- Tie it to the bed frame. Use a short cord or a zip tie on a leg or the headboard, on the side you get out of bed. That way it stays put when everything else moves.
- Keep it closed. A closed bag keeps glass and dust out of your shoes.
- Check it on the 1st. Click the flashlight on and off, and make sure the glasses are still your current ones.
Where this comes from: earthquake safety experts suggest a small bag of supplies tied to your bed, and the Red Cross calls it a bed kit. What goes in it: sturdy shoes and socks, a flashlight or headlamp, spare glasses in a hard case, a whistle, a dust mask and work gloves.
That's one page. Every chapter is built like it: what's really going on, the steps to take, and a Tonight box of small jobs.

“Being prepared isn't about fear. My parents kept a tidy shelf and a calm head, and that's what got us through.”
I'm George. Every September when I was a boy, my father ran a little drill: check the water, test the flashlights, and make sure everyone knew where to meet if something happened. We kids rolled our eyes. Years later, when the power went out for days, we were the calm house on the street.
I'm not a soldier or a survival expert. I'm a regular man who keeps one tidy shelf and checks it on the first of every month. This book is that shelf, written down, with everything checked against official government guidance.
